Shoppers eligible for tax-free treatment
- Foreign visitors (who entered Japan less than six months ago with “Temporary Visitor” or similar status)
- Japanese nationals living abroad (who have resided outside Japan for at least two years)
*To be eligible, you must have an entry stamp (landing permission sticker) or, for Japanese nationals, a Residency Certificate.
*To receive a consumption tax refund, you must complete three steps: have your purchase record registered at the tax-free counter, register your chosen refund method, and complete customs procedures when leaving Japan.

Qualifying Amounts for Tax-free Treatment
- The same tax-free rules apply to all eligible goods, whether or not they are consumable.
- To qualify, your total purchases at the same commercial facility must be ¥5,000 or more (excluding tax) in a single day.
⚠️ At the shop, you will first pay the full price, including consumption tax.
※You will be charged a processing fee of up to 3.3% of the tax-free purchase amount for tax-free shopping procedures.
How to Receive Your Tax Refund
- 1) At the tax-free counter
Present your purchased items, passport, and receipt.
Your purchase record will be registered. - 2) Register your refund method
Access the dedicated website using the QR code or other information provided, then enter the details of the credit card or other cashless payment method you would like to use to receive your refund. - 3) Complete customs inspection when leaving Japan
Have your passport and purchased items checked by customs at a kiosk or other designated point. After inspection, the amount equivalent to the consumption tax, minus the processing fee, will be refunded through your chosen method.
※Please keep your purchased items with you until they have been inspected by customs.
